Sleepy Hollow upgraded SUPER FLEX® from type 304 to type
304-L late in 1983. This more expensive, less
readily available alloy was chosen to provide
greater protection in the event of repeated chimney
fires—eliminating the hazard of intergranular corrosion. Removing the carbon
content accomplishes three things:
1. Elimination of chromium carbides (carbon
combining with chrome at high temperatures).
2. Less carbon increases the chrome and
nickel content, increasing corrosion resistance.
3. Reducing carbon content makes the
stainless slightly softer, enabling it to drill,
cut, and form easier as evidenced by our unique oval
chimney liner series.
Type 304-L stainless steel is a non-magnetic
alloy with a carbon content of .03 maximum, chrome
content 18/20, nickel content 8/12. Using mill
certified stainless purchased from specialty mills
ensures the highest quality stainless alloy
available. Our SUPER FLEX® carbon content
usually runs about .013 maximum, with small amounts
of moly present, ingredients not found in grades of
stainless used for many of today's chimney liner
systems. |

Sleepy Hollow introduced
316-L SUPER
FLEX® chimney liner and related components in
1981 because we saw the necessity for more than one
alloy. Like 304-L, 316-L has a .03 maximum
carbon content, 16/18 chrome, 10/14 nickel content,
and 2-3% moly. The critical ingredient is molybdenum
or moly—added for pitting and superior corrosion resistance
in flue gas environments containing acids, chlorides, and salts. Moly is also a valuable
addition because it strengthens alloys at high
temperatures. Type 316-L is ten times better
in a corrosive environment than 304-L or 321
would be. When selecting a stainless steel liner for
coal burning applications (both hard and soft coal)
and fuel oil, type 316-L should be specified.
England’s code BS4543 requires type 316 stainless
steel for metal chimney systems venting coal and gas
burning appliances.
Type 316-L SUPER FLEX® provides the best of
both worlds in high and low temperature
applications.
